Appetite came to us with a fast-turnaround brief for a suspended fabric installation at Appetite on the Farm.

The aim was to transform a series of existing timber goalposts into something softer and more immersive, using long runs of fabric to create a layered canopy across the space.

From sign-off to install, we had seven days to develop the system, source the materials, fabricate the components and get it ready for site.

02 / The Build

The installation was designed around the existing timber structures, using galvanised Unistrut, tensioned wire and individually prepared fabric runs to create a secure suspension system without interfering with the original framework.

Each strip was cut and prepared off-site before being threaded onto the wire and installed in position. Different levels of ruching were used across the canopy to break up the repetition and give the fabric more depth and movement.

Because the installation was outdoors, every part of the system had to account for weather, material weight and long-term tension. We used waterproof, UV-resistant and fire-retardant canvas alongside galvanised hardware selected specifically for exterior use.

03 / The Details

This was one of those projects where the simplicity of the finished installation hid a lot of the work behind it.

Spacing, tension, fixing points and fabric quantities all had to be worked out in advance so that the system could be installed efficiently once on site.

A relatively simple material, pushed through careful detailing, repetition and scale.
