SCOPE
01 / The Narrative
Barghain was our festival-ready take on one of club culture’s most recognisable buildings.
Designed as GemFest’s darker, heavier micro-venue, the frontage borrowed from brutalist architecture and underground rave spaces without becoming a literal replica.
It needed to sit comfortably within Steel Street while immediately feeling like a different corner of the world — colder, rougher and more industrial than the surrounding venues.
02 / The Build
The structure was built around a deliberately heavy architectural language.
Deep cornices, structural columns, recessed windows and industrial butcher curtains gave the façade its weight before the scenic work began.
From there, everything was distressed and dirtied down by hand. Layers of texture, raw steel tones and weathered finishes were built up across the surfaces so that the venue felt established rather than newly constructed.
The aim was never perfection. Small inconsistencies, wear and roughness were deliberately left visible because they made the building feel more believable.
03 / The energy
During the day, the architecture carried most of the visual weight.
At night, lighting, haze and the glow through the windows completely changed the building. Hard lines disappeared into shadow, red light caught the distressed surfaces and the whole façade became much more intense.
That shift was what made Barghain work as a venue rather than just a frontage.
It had its own atmosphere and identity while still feeling completely part of the wider Steel Street world.
